What is the difference between a firearm silencer and suppressor?

If we delve into the debate surrounding the nomenclature of these devices, commonly referred to as either “silencers” or “suppressors,” it’s evident that opinions diverge on the matter. The question arises: does it truly matter what label we assign to these devices, or are they merely interchangeable terms for the same concept? Should one opt for the traditionalist approach and use “silencer,” or adhere to technical accuracy by employing “suppressor”? Alternatively, could we embrace the colloquialisms within the firearms community, such as “can” or “moderator”?

Ultimately, the choice of terminology lies with personal preference. While some may advocate for the term “silencer” out of adherence to tradition, others argue in favor of “suppressor” due to its more technical precision. Indeed, within advocacy circles and political discourse, “suppressor” has gained traction as the preferred designation. However, both terms are deemed acceptable and hold validity in describing these devices. Don’t worry on what you call it, we know what you are looking for.

Is it legal to own a firearm silencer / suppressor in Connecticut?

Federal law has consistently allowed the ownership of firearm silencers and there are legal in Connecticut as well. If you meet the criteria to purchase a handgun and reside in a state like Connecticut, where ownership is permitted, the likelihood is high that owning a silencer is also legal for you. The key prerequisites include being eligible to purchase a handgun, residing in a state that allows silencer ownership (such as Connecticut), and complying with certain basic requirements:

  1. Eligibility: You must meet the criteria to purchase a handgun, including age and legal status.
  2. Residency: Living in a state like Connecticut that permits ownership of firearm silencers.
  3. No Felony Convictions: You should not have any felony convictions on your record.
  4. Passing ATF Background Check: Successfully clearing the background check conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

If these conditions are met, it’s highly probable that owning a silencer in states like Connecticut is legal for you, aligning with federal law provisions.

Do I need a special license to own a firearm suppressor in Connecticut?

There’s a misconception that acquiring a “Class 3” License is necessary to own a firearm silencer in Connecticut. However, this belief is inaccurate. What is required, upon purchasing a silencer, is a one-time federal tax stamp payment of $200. Unlike recurring fees or the need for additional licenses, this tax stamp serves as a federal levy, akin to sales tax, though directed to the federal government rather than the state. Once this fee is paid, there are no ongoing expenses or licenses needed to possess the silencer in Connecticut.
